A Quality Inspector's Saturday: Exhaust Manifold Leak Sound, K&N Filters, and the Strut vs Shock Question

But there's a downside: over-oiling a K&N air filter can coat a mass air flow sensor and make the engine run rich. That's not a brand defect. It's an installation problem. If you install one, let the oil dry before reinstalling it.

If a strut is worn, alignment can shift and tire wear gets uneven. If a shock is worn, you get bouncing, but alignment usually stays put.

The Real Lesson: Ask What's Not Included

Before I found the heat shield, I'd called a shop for a quote on an exhaust manifold gasket. One quoted $210. The other quoted $120. Guess which one added a $45 'shop supplies' fee and a $30 'environmental' fee after the work? The $120 one.

I've learned to ask what's NOT included before asking what's the price.
