A Week of k&n Questions: Air Filter Adapters, Thermostats, and Strut Replacement Costs

I run procurement for a mid-size automotive metal stamping company. We make dies, stampings, CNC machined parts, forgings, and aluminum extrusions for OEMs and tier-one suppliers. My title is office administrator, which in practice means I buy everything from tool steel to floor cleaner—roughly $200,000 a year across 60 to 80 orders and maybe a dozen active vendors.

The company's name is k&n. And here's the thing: people always assume we're the filter brand. We're not. Our k&n comes from the founder's initials, not K&N Engineering. But the mix-up happens so often I've learned to roll with it. Last month, it led to five separate conversations in five days—and they all circled back to one idea that defines this business.

Quality perception. The part you put on something becomes the part people remember.

Monday: The K&N Air Filter Adapter

Dave from engineering stopped by my desk with a laptop open to an order page for a k&n air filter adapter. He's building a custom intake on his 2013 GMC Terrain and needed a stamped plate that would let him mount a cone filter in place of the factory airbox.

I told him the filter itself is a K&N product—well-engineered, proven media. But the conversation went somewhere Dave didn't expect. A filter adapter is a flat stamped plate with a flange that has to seal. If the flatness is off by even a few thousandths of an inch, the seal leaks. The engine pulls unfiltered air, and a performance filter becomes a liability.

"So what are you telling me?" he asked.

I'm telling you the adapter matters just as much as the filter. What most people don't realize is how much of a part's quality lives in tolerances you can't see with the naked eye. We've stamped brackets ten times the size of that adapter, and the same rule applies: the die design, the material grade, the finishing steps—they all determine whether that part does its job for years or fails in months.

Tuesday: The Gold Oil Filter for a GMC Terrain

Mia from sales caught me near the coffee machine. Her 2016 Terrain was due for an oil change, and she'd been reading about the k&n 11-17 gmc terrain performance gold oil filter. Was it worth double the price of a standard filter?

For what it is, K&N builds a solid product. The gold model uses a higher-flow media and a bypass valve designed to maintain oil pressure on cold starts. But the deeper question wasn't the filter brand. It was the same logic I run into every day in purchasing. The filter housing—the threaded base—is machined metal. On that Terrain, the mating surface on the engine is a precision aluminum casting, exactly the kind of part we produce at k&n. If either surface has burrs or thread damage, the filter seats fine but leaks under pressure. The $12 premium for a better filter is trivial next to the repair bill for an oil leak.

Quality is the whole path, not any one component. Put another way: every link in the chain has to hold.

Wednesday: The E36 Exhaust System

Marcus, one of our CNC machinists, is restoring a 1997 BMW 328i. He asked if I knew a good source for an e36 exhaust system without paying the BMW tax. I don't claim to be an E36 authority—that was his project and his knowledge. But as the person who writes purchase orders, I know how to break a buy down into what matters.

Full system or cat-back? If he only needed the rear section, a mid-range stainless system from a known aftermarket brand would do. But Marcus had a deeper concern. The factory hangers are stamped brackets with rubber isolators. On a 25-year-old car, the brackets are usually rusted and the rubber is cracked. Even a premium exhaust rattles if the hangers are junk. The whole car starts to feel cheap.

"That's exactly it," he said. "The bracket noise is what makes it feel cheap."

I told him he just described our business. We stamp exhaust hangers, transmission mounts, and body brackets for OEMs—parts that are never visible in the final vehicle. But when one fails, the customer doesn't say "the hanger failed." They say the whole car feels poorly built. That's why we never skip the QC step on a die, no matter how simple the part looks.

Thursday: The 120V Thermostat That Broke My Heart

Then came my own mistake.

The warehouse office uses a line-voltage heater controlled by a simple 120v thermostat. The old unit had been cycling erratically for weeks—the bimetal switch inside was worn out. I ordered a replacement online for $18.

Cheap thermostats of that type usually use push-in terminals and a loose temperature dial. Mine worked for two days, and then the switch contacts welded shut. I walked in Thursday afternoon to find the heater running full blast at 84 degrees.

I went back and forth on the reorder: get the same $18 unit and hope the first one was a bad batch, or spend $45 on a proven brand. The argument lasted longer than it should have, because I was embarrassed that I'd tried to save money on a component after years of buying industrial parts. I ordered the $45 one. Looking back, I should have done that from the start. The $27 I saved cost me four hours of my team's time and a room full of unhappy people.

My finance manager summed it up in a way I still repeat:

"The lowest invoice price isn't the lowest total cost."

That thermostat, in a way, was the point of the entire week.

Friday: How Much Is Strut Replacement?

Friday morning, my sister called. Her 2018 Ford Escape was knocking from the front passenger side, and the shop quoted her $680 for one strut. She asked: "How much is strut replacement supposed to cost? Is this normal?"

From what I've seen in the market, a front strut replacement on a compact crossover typically runs $400 to $800 per corner, depending on whether you're replacing a complete assembly or doing spring-over-shock work (based on various shop quotes I've encountered through early 2025—prices vary by region, so verify locally). Her quote was on the higher end, but not outrageous.

The more important question was the brand of strut the shop planned to install. Budget units can be 40% cheaper but often have a shorter life and a harsher ride. A quality unit costs more upfront and lasts two to three times longer. Same labor either way.

"Does the brand change the price that much?" she asked.

It changes the part price, I said. But it also changes how the car drives, how long it lasts, and what she thinks of the shop that installed it. That's brand perception in mechanical form.

What the Week Taught Me

Five days, five parts, one thread. Whether it's the adapter on an air filter, a stamped hanger under a BMW, a $18 thermostat, or a strut on a crossover, the quality of the part writes the story about the person or company who chose it.

At k&n, we make parts that are invisible in the final product. Our stampings sit inside transmissions, door latches, and engine mounts. Nobody puts a sticker on a bracket. But when a part works for 150,000 miles, the OEM that installed it gets the credit. When it fails at 30,000, the same OEM gets the blame. That's the weight our work carries. Our quality system follows IATF 16949, and every tooling release goes through PPAP documentation before we ship a single piece.

This approach works for us because we're set up for it: in-house tooling, CNC capability, and a quality team that reviews every die before production. If you're a smaller shop sourcing parts through an importer, the calculus might be different—warranty and liability become bigger factors. Your mileage will vary, and it should. But from where I sit, quality perception isn't a soft concept. It's a purchasing decision you make every time you fire off a PO.

The $12 filter. The $27 thermostat upcharge. The $680 strut replacement. None of them felt significant in the moment. All of them shaped how someone felt about a product, a shop, or the person who recommended it.

That's the part nobody budgets for.
