So here's my hot take, and I'll put it right at the top: Too many shops are buying K&N products just because it says K&N on the box. Even in B2B automotive, I see it with our powertrain prototyping team—they ask for a K&N because that's what they've always used, not because it's the best fit for the validated airflow target.
Don't get me wrong. K&N makes a solid product. But I've been handling purchasing for our facility for about seven years now—roughly $1.8M across 20-odd vendors annually—and I've learned that brand loyalty can become a blind spot. This piece isn't a K&N hit piece. It's an argument for doing the math.

For a production or heavy-use environment? It's different.
We ran numbers for a client project last year. They were comparing DNA air filters vs K&N for a fleet of light commercial vehicles. Here's what the TCO analysis looked like:
- K&N purchase price: roughly $65–$80 per filter depending on the part.
- DNA purchase price: roughly $48–$60 per filter.

What We Actually Need from a Supplier: Reliability, Not Prestige
Last quarter, we consolidated our maintenance parts ordering and put stricter criteria in place. I'm not saying you should drop K&N from your approved supplier list. What I'm saying is that we added a second and third source for filtration parts.
That gives us:
- Better negotiation leverage on price breaks.

The whole exercise forced us to actually read the airflow diagrams instead of relying on the K&N badge. That's a good thing, and frankly, it's something more procurement teams should do.

For the sake of fairness, I'll play devil's advocate. I do still order K&N for certain applications.
If your operation has a strict brand standardization policy, or you've already validated the existing intake setup with K&N and tracked data for thousands of hours, switching can introduce risk with no measurable reward. The cost of re-validating that component is more than the unit price difference. I get it.
That's not a knock. It's a reminder that the cheapest option on paper can be the most expensive one in the real world—and likewise, the premium brand isn't automatically the smartest purchase either. Context wins.
Some Practical Notes for Buyers & Maintenance Teams
If you've got a go kart exhaust pipe order coming up or you're stocking up on clamp-on filters supplier-wide, here are three rules that have saved us from making emotional buying decisions:
- Read the technical spec before you add to cart. Even if you've bought the same part number for three years, check the datasheet once a year. Suppliers change materials.
- Measure the actual filter media area. A "performance" filter that's half the surface area of a stock filter can still pass the bench test with a high flow number—but it will clog faster.
- Track the maintenance cost per incident. How much time does it take to clean and re-oil a filter? Does the labor cost get cooked into overhead? It should be part of your comparison.
And, yes, I also consider night differential pay when doing cost analysis for line-side maintenance—because when our team has to do an emergency filter swap during the second shift, that hourly rate is higher. Not everyone includes that. It's in our spreadsheet.
The Bottom Line
I'm not anti-K&N. I'm anti-unexamined K&N.
If the product works for your application, buy it. But if you're buying it because "we've always used K&N" or "the brand name sounds cool," you're probably leaving money on the table.
