Common Mistakes I've Made (and Want You to Skip)
I'm an office administrator for a 30-person landscaping company. I manage all the fleet maintenance parts ordering—roughly $60,000 a year across 8 vendors. I report to both operations and finance. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm the one who hears about it when a part doesn't fit.
If someone on your team just asked 'how do I know if my throttle body is bad?', this checklist is for you. It also covers the parts I usually order around the same problem: the K&N HP-7038 oil filter, drum brake parts, and the Kawasaki FR691V fuel pump.
What This Checklist Is For
Use this when you need to make a practical call before you call a supplier. It's not a full repair manual. It's the process I use to slow down, find the actual failure, and order something that will fix it the first time.
Step 1: Confirm the Throttle Body Is Actually the Problem
The question 'how do I know if my throttle body is bad?' usually comes with these symptoms: rough idle, stalling when you take your foot off the gas, a check engine light, or a feeling that the engine is not responding smoothly to the pedal.
Before you order anything, read the codes. A throttle position sensor code like P0121 doesn't mean the throttle body is dead. It means the sensor circuit is out of range. That can be caused by a dirty connector, a chafed wire, a failing pedal position sensor, or even low battery voltage.
Everything I'd read about throttle bodies said they're a common failure part. In practice, I found more throttle-body complaints on our trucks were caused by carbon buildup and wiring than by the actual throttle body.
One more thing: if the vehicle has missed basic maintenance, check the air filter and fuel filter first. A clogged fuel filter can mimic a bad fuel pump. A clogged air filter can mimic a throttle body problem.
Step 2: Clean It and Check the Wiring Before You Replace It
If the throttle bore and butterfly are covered in carbon, the plate can stick. Clean it with throttle-body cleaner and a soft cloth. If the idle stabilizes, you just saved a few hundred dollars.
The step most people ignore is the connector. I've seen a throttle body code triggered by a broken lock tab on the connector. The connector looked fine from above, but if you wiggled it, the engine stalled. That's not a throttle body failure. That's a $5 terminal pin.
Check the accelerator pedal position sensor too. On drive-by-wire systems, the ECU compares the pedal position to the throttle plate position. A mismatch sets a code, and the code often points at the throttle body—or rather, at the circuit that controls it.
Use a multimeter to check for continuity on the harness. Sometimes the wire breaks inside the loom and looks perfect on the outside. That's the thing that wasted the most of our time.
The code is a clue, not a verdict.
Step 3: Order the Right Throttle Body
If you've confirmed the throttle body is bad, use the VIN and the OEM part number. A throttle body might look identical between model years but have a different calibration. If the new unit doesn't come with the throttle position sensor or actuator motor, you'll need to transfer them carefully.
The last one we ordered was $185. Actually, $214 with the gasket and shipping. I mention the price because the cheap lookalikes online aren't a bargain if the calibration is wrong.
Some suppliers ask for a photo of the old part. Send it. The photo helps them confirm the connector style and mounting orientation. It's a small step that prevents a return.
If the throttle body is an electronic unit, ask whether it needs a relearn procedure after installation. Some vehicles need the idle reset with a scan tool. If your shop doesn't have that tool, the new part may still run poorly until the relearn is done.
Step 4: Check the FR691V Fuel Pump Before You Blame the Fuel System
On our mowers, the engine is a Kawasaki FR691V. The FR691V fuel pump is a common failure point, but so is the plastic pulse line that drives it. The pump uses crankcase vacuum pulses. If that line cracks, the pump stops even though the pump itself is fine.
If a mower starts, runs, then dies, don't order a fuel pump before you check fuel delivery. The Kawasaki service manual has a pressure test procedure. I want to say the last FR691V fuel pump we bought was around $90, but don't quote me on that—it changes with every supplier.
I've never fully understood why some engine failures happen right after an oil change, but my best guess is the fuel line gets knocked loose while the tech is reaching for the oil filter. Check that before you throw parts at it.
Step 5: Don't Forget Drum Brake Parts While the Wheel Is Off
If the same vehicle is already in the bay, look at the brakes. I don't order drum brake parts until I know the drum size and shoe width. But I also know that a brake job is not just shoes and a drum.
Hardware kits are the part of the order that gets skipped. The return springs, hold-down clips, and adjuster mechanism have as much to do with the feel of the pedal as the shoes. Reusing fifty-cent springs on a brake job is a false economy.
If a wheel cylinder is leaking, replace it too, because a new shoe saturated in fluid isn't a good brake. And if the drum is scored beyond spec, measure it with a brake drum micrometer and replace it if needed. Otherwise, the new shoes won't seat properly.
Drum brakes are still common on trailers, commercial vans, and economy cars. If the tech says the adjuster is frozen or the self-adjuster cable is broken, those parts are usually in the hardware kit. Buy the full kit instead of fishing out individual springs.
Step 6: Know What the K&N Oil Filter Micron Rating Actually Means
While I'm ordering parts, the filter question comes up a lot. The K&N oil filter micron rating is a spec that gets quoted but not always understood.
Micron rating tells you how small a particle the filter media can catch. What I mean is, it's a size cutoff, not a quality score. A lower number sounds better, but it doesn't automatically make a filter better for your engine. If a filter catches smaller particles, it also has to have enough surface area to let oil flow through without pressure drop. Both matter.
Technically, a micron is one-millionth of a meter. If a filter material stops particles at 20 microns, it catches most particles larger than that. But the test method and flow rate affect the result, so comparing raw numbers from different brands is not always apples to apples.
If you're buying a K&N HP-7038 oil filter, start with the part number and the application. K&N publishes the technical details for each filter on its official product page, including efficiency data. In many of their filters, the rating is around 99% single-pass efficiency at 20 microns. But don't trust my memory for your exact filter—look at the spec sheet.
Pick the filter that meets the engine manufacturer's flow and efficiency requirements, not the one with the smallest number.
Step 7: Don't Let a Small Order Make You a Small Deal
Here's the part that matters to me as a buyer. When I call a supplier for one fuel pump or one brake hardware kit, some of them make me feel like I'm wasting their time. I won't name names because it's not about one company. It's about an attitude.
Small doesn't mean unimportant. Some of our annual accounts started with a $200 order. The vendors who treated those orders seriously are the ones I still call for the larger replacements. If a supplier sighs at a small order, they'll probably sigh at the warranty claim too.
Ask them one question: 'If this part is wrong, how fast will you make it right?' The answer tells you everything about how they handle small customers.
Common Mistakes I've Made (and Want You to Skip)
- Replacing a throttle body before cleaning the bore and checking the wiring. The code is a clue, not a verdict.
- Ordering drum brake parts without the hardware kit. Then the tech comes back for springs, and the vehicle waits an extra day.
- Assuming an FR691V fuel pump is bad before checking the pulse line and fuel hose. A 5-minute test can save a $100 mistake.
- Choosing a K&N HP-7038 oil filter just because it's a K&N. The micron rating and application both have to line up.
That's the checklist. If you take one thing from it, take this: slow down, verify the failure, and buy the right part from a supplier who treats you like a repeat customer. Because if they handle your small order right, you'll keep coming back.
