Most of those mistakes had one thing in common: I ordered parts before I finished diagnosing. If your engine has a K&N air filter, the first thing I want you to do is remove it and look at it. Don't assume it's fine just because someone said it was changed last year. The dirtiest K&N filter I've ever seen came from a customer who swore he'd cleaned it a month before. He hadn't. We found sand in the air box.
According to K&N's care instructions (knfilters.com), a K&N air filter should be cleaned every 50,000 miles under normal highway driving. Off-road, dusty, or race conditions mean you'll need to clean it more often. I don't rely on mileage. I hold the filter up to a light and look through the pleats. If you can't see light through the pleats, it's time to clean it.
The right way to clean a K&N air filter is easy, but easy doesn't mean foolproof. Spray on the K&N filter cleaner, let it soak for about 10 minutes, rinse with low-pressure water from the inside out, and let it air dry. Do not use compressed air to speed up drying. I've seen it tear pleats. Once dry, apply the oil evenly. With K&N air filters on motorcycles, the same steps apply, but the risk is over-oiling because the filter is small. Too much oil can migrate into the intake and coat the mass air flow sensor. If you run a K&N on a motorcycle, check the MAF or throttle body after you clean it. A contaminated MAF will cause rough running, and you'll be tempted to blame the fuel system.

The 5.9 Cummins is one of the most common engines I see in trucks that won't start, or start and run rough. The lift pump gets blamed a lot. I've been guilty of that. If a Rislone cleaner clears up a rough idle after a couple of tanks, you probably had a mild deposit issue. If it doesn't, stop pouring chemicals in and start reading data.
Step 3: Know the signs a wheel bearing is going out
Wheel bearings usually fail quietly, then get loud. The classic signs are easy to confuse with tire or brake noise. Here's what I listen for:
- A rumbling or grinding noise that gets louder as speed increases.
- A clicking or popping noise when turning one direction. That can mean a damaged bearing race.
- Vibration in the steering wheel or seat that changes with vehicle speed.
- A noise that changes when you shift the vehicle's weight from side to side.
- Excessive play in the wheel when it's jacked up. Grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. If it moves, the bearing is likely worn.
To be fair, not every rumbling wheel is a bearing. Last month a customer was sure his front wheel bearing was shot. The noise appeared at low speed, and it was worse when turning. Up on the lift, we found a stone wedged between the brake rotor and the backing plate. One tap with a screwdriver removed it. Dodged a bullet there—I was one estimate away from selling a $450 hub assembly.
If you identify bearing play, don't drive on it. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (nhtsa.gov), a severely worn wheel bearing can affect wheel control and stability. Replacing a bearing is cheaper than replacing a knuckle or a fender, not to mention the other things that happen when a wheel stops pointing where you aim it.

This is the step everyone skips because it's boring. I get it. Replacing a relay doesn't make a good story. But it's often the fix.
Before you order any fuel pump, check the relay and fuse first. Listen for the relay clicking when the key cycles. Find the ground strap on the frame and inspect it. Look for rubbed wires, especially on the engine harness. I once replaced a lift pump on a 5.9 Cummins because the pressure was low. The actual cause was a harness that had melted against the exhaust manifold. A two-hour wiring repair, but I'd already sold the customer a $600 pump.
The same idea applies to wheel bearings. Check the brake caliper. A seized caliper can get hot, make noise, and feel like bearing trouble. Check the tire for irregular wear before you pull the hub. A tire can produce a rhythmic rumble that sounds exactly like a bad bearing.
And for the K&N side of things: if you've cleaned the filter and the engine is still running rough, check the mass air flow sensor. Over-oiling can leave a film, and the MAF doesn't know what to do with it. Use a dedicated MAF cleaner, not brake cleaner.

The first three mistakes I made were because I didn't document anything. I'd guess my way through a second or third time with the same symptom and ignore the notes in my head. So in 2021, I started a simple repair log. Customer name, vehicle, symptom, what I tested, what I replaced, and whether it actually fixed it.
The 5-point checklist I created after my third mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework over the last 18 months. I'm not 100% sure on that number—maybe $6,500, I'd have to check the spreadsheet. But I know we've caught 47 potential errors using it. Don't hold me to that exact count either. The point is clear: five minutes of writing beats five days of warranty work.
If I could redo my earlier decisions, I'd invest in better diagnosis habits upfront. But given what I knew then, spending $3,700 was the tuition.
