The bottle labels look similar at a glance, and both have the word 'cleaner' in big letters. Read the smaller text. If it says cabin filter, use it on the cabin filter. If it says air filter, use it on the air filter.

How do I use K&N air filter cleaner without wrecking my MAF sensor?

Use less oil than you think. The cleaner itself is not the usual culprit; the re-oiling step is. If you see pools or dark patches on the cotton, the excess oil can travel downstream and coat the mass airflow sensor. The result is a rough idle, a lean code, and a sensor replacement nobody budgeted for.

  1. Remove and vacuum loose dirt first.
  2. Spray K&N air filter cleaner on both sides, let it soak for ten minutes, then rinse with low-pressure water from the clean side toward the dirty side.
  3. Let the filter dry completely. Not mostly dry. Completely.

But here's the catch: a P0420 code is not proof of a clogged converter. P0420 means catalyst efficiency is below threshold. That can come from a lazy oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or a misfire dumping raw fuel into the converter. In September 2022, I approved a converter replacement based on P0420 alone. The car still ran badly afterward. The real issue was a cracked flex pipe pulling in air and fooling the sensor. $900 in parts, three days of lost shop time, and a lesson I won't repeat.

If you're reading codes, the P0420 definition comes from the standardized diagnostic trouble code set in SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6. That shared standard is why the same code shows up across brands.

If you suspect a clogged converter, check for codes, compare both oxygen sensor waveforms, and do a backpressure test before ordering parts. It's not the fastest path, but it's the cheap one.

Can a dirty K&N air filter cause clogged catalytic converter signs?

Indirectly, yes. A severely clogged engine air filter changes the air-fuel mixture, and an over-oiled filter can coat the MAF sensor. Both can push the engine toward misfires. Misfires send unburned fuel into the converter, which raises temperature and can damage the catalyst.

So the link isn't 'dirty filter directly clogs converter.' The link is 'bad filter maintenance leads to misfire, and misfire kills converters.' I traced a P0420 back to an over-oiled K&N filter once, which is why this question is on the list.

If you have a K&N filter, the maintenance task is not optional. A clean, lightly oiled K&N does the job. A neglected one can create problems that look like electrical or exhaust issues.

Trakmotive CV axle review: are they good for a daily driver?

Here's an honest answer from our order records: Trakmotive axles have been a decent mid-range option for daily drivers. Between June 2023 and December 2024, we sold about 60 Trakmotive CV axles and processed two warranty returns—both boot splits, one at the clamp and one after a hard impact.
